D1 / Grade 11 “Salon” small group work Lesson
Here is an outline of a lesson geared to an IB Geo class but the frmework works really well for many subjects.
The source for this lesson was "Edutopia":

And here is the modified version I used for IB D1 Geography:
Salon Protocol: (Any subject)
Salon explained HERE and HERE
• Divide class into groups (of 3 or 5)
• Assign a “host” at each group
• Assign each group to take a particular subtopic, point of view or
perspective to focus on. Each group must
Discuss and agree on the definition of the key terms that are assigned;
Provide a summary of the text’s treatment of the topic/terms;
Confirm agreement with the text’s treatment or provide their assessment/critique; and
Develop questions for their classmates to discuss.
• The host remains at the table and half the student rotate left and the other half rotate right
• The hosts facilitate discussions at their tables using their questions;
• Students keep rotating until there are back in their original groups;
Discussion elements from previous salons may be raised in any other salon to inform the discussion;
• Hosts share out the salient points of the discussions they facilitated;
• Students take notes on content; and
• Class debriefs on content and process
